Old Housemates

I try to keep a sort of diary and as I went trough it I came across this little gem!

27 March 2012
Had an interesting day yesterday. Sis was early at home and we planted and went nuts outside. Around 3 Sis asked me to put on the kettle, she will make us some coffee. I had a monster of heartburn, so I took a glass out of the drying rack on the zinc, drank my Bicarbonate of Soda and went out. Past Sis in the front door, she to the kitchen and I was on my way to where we cleaning and repotting. I just sat down when a bloodcurdling scream filled the air out of the kitchen.

Couldn’t make out what was going on so I went on cleaning the pot of old soil, as Boet was also in the house. The next moment all the animals came flying out of the windows and doors. Something was wrong so I went inside. Past Sis in the front door again, just said ‘snake’. I crossed the 8m or so to the kitchen in a few seconds to see what was going on as I was just 5 min earlier there and there was no snake!!

Boet was standing, watching something with an eagle eye and as I looked around him, a snake was disappearing from the zinc, behind the washing machine!! The next moment a shovel came crashing down between us! Wham! The shovel hit the zinc with such force that the poor snake vanished immediately and the dishes were rattling everywhere!!! I almost had a heart attack!

It was with one sweep and everything was on the floor. Must mention that she didn’t break anything! LOL she’s good! What I could see, it was a brown snake, and as far as I know you only get nervous when it is a silver one! They started to rip the washing machine out of the wall when I got them calmed and asked them to step away so that I can see what’s going on.

A brown snake was making its way into the cupboard underneath the zinc. Maybe I shouldn’t have mentioned it, as the cupboard was cleared within seconds and everything was on the floor. Now look, my kitchen is small and with all that stuff on the floor, there is no way that you can move in there.

Sis was reaching for her shovel again and I moved it out of her reach. After a few seconds I convinced her to take a good look at it. Boet was also behind me with a broom!! When she got a good look at it, she noticed the small head and the golden brown color, but she was still nervous! Boet is one of those, snake = death (for the snake!!) so I got them out of the kitchen and tried to get hold of the snake, but it was so nervous that I left it where it was.

Sis had phone Bro by now and told him what happened, I just told her to tell him that it’s behind the zinc cupboard and that it was safe from them!! Apparently she noticed the brown thing behind the pots and pans I washed and left there to dry, when she wanted to get a spoon from the drying rack and immediately thought that is was dog poo, (don’t know how it would have gotten there!!???) then she also thought that it was impossible so she poked it with her finger! The third time she poked it, it started to move, and so did she!!! Just have to mention that I made coffee for the rest of the afternoon until Bro came 3 hours later!!!

We kept an eye on it until Bro came, removed the backing board and picked up the snake. It was a harmless brown house snake curled up underneath the zinc and the way he was around it and with the cats, I have the idea that he is an old housemate!!!

One thing I’m sure off, the next time he will be moving into a house he will make sure it’s not owned by a mad woman who owns a garden service with a shitload of shovels!! I think he will be in therapy for years due to the shovel shock he got yesterday!!!
